Day 3 Update

Hello again race fans,
So after yesterday we arrived this morning to the 9:30 AM pilots meeting all in jackets and a distinctly cool feel to the air. The morning pilots meeting was interesting for several reasons.

First, CD Mc Clung has instituted a few new wrinkles that I will admit I have never seen before. On the Sunday no fly day, he opened the next day’s meeting saying, "but I have prizes." He had young Owen Brayer draw three of the contestants ID numbers out of the hat and then announced that these three were to report to the kitchen at 6 PM to assist in bringing the meal to the dining area and to assist the cooks in clean up and wash up afterwards.

Second, he also decreed that each day winner shall give the safety briefing the next day.

I mention these all because John Good admitted this morning that he won the trifecta, having to do all 3. Curious minds want to know, what will he do after someone wins multiple days, does he do more than 1 safety briefing? We shall see.

Enough of that and on to today. The weatherman was very pessimistic on the chances of seeing anything but 95% overcast all day. This is caused by a low pressure system over Virginia.  The winds due to this were out of the south. Southern winds days at Mifflin create opportunities for the back side ridge day. Folks who follow racing here know what they are, but most that fly one don’t have them very high up the ladder of their fun meter.  Today was no exception! Many people bailed out and came back, a few landed out and a lot of grumbling was heard after the task.

A very interesting feature of this type of task is that it is so short, that you can go out once, turn in the log and attempt it again. Several did that today and the day winner, Noah Reiter was actually a late day try. I launched him at 4:30 PM as the first of six to go at that time. I am not sure how the rest did, but Noah was back before I left the field and had a broad smile. In second was Andy Brayer, so we have two very recent former Harris Hill Juniors on top of the score sheet today. Good job guys and keep it up.

There was no official meal tonight, but the informal group talking about the future of soaring in Central Pa were, hosting a beer and pizza social. I will have more on the turnout and ideas from this later in the week.
