Try

Last night we had rain overnight, catching the western edge of the major rain system that has been fooding SE Kansas the last few days.

This morning the cloud base was quite low, but we saw a little promise in the forecast. I decided that we needed to make every effort to fly. Grid was set and first launch scheduled for 2 PM. The day heated up nicely but the sniffers found almost nothing rising. Cumulus cloud streets stretched across the horizon but nothing was workable. A high cirrus band thickened, a few more gliders scratched around in zero sink.

Rain showers were reported in most quadrants. Finally, the task was cancelled.

Tomorrow we will make one last try to get in another contest day. The forecast shows promise. Tomorrow night is the final dinner. Friday morning is the 1-26 awards banquet and then everyone will be on their way home.
