Contest Day 1 Monday April 19

Update 1: Mid-morning  - The highlight of the mandatory meeting featured the presentation to our hosts, Allison and Rhonda Tyler for 20 years of exceptional hospitality at R5N. The brainchild of Marshall McClung and the contribution of the contestants, a piece of glass art was commissioned as a lasting gift to the Tylers. The artist is Lewis Olson from Corning, NY. Today's Wx.: Today will be a lot like yesterday, perhaps a little dryer. We'll have 10-12 knots NW wind in the boundary layer, thermal tops around 5500, perhaps 6000 ft. Update 2: Round up
Another beautiful day but a little dryer than Sunday. The wind was NW at 10-12 kts with thermals at 5500. Grid time was 12:00 with first launce at 12:30. McClung called an assigned task with turnpoints Allendale, St George, Aiken for the sports class and for all other classes the call was for an assigned task with turnpoints Allendale, St George, Williston, House Movers. The day turned out to be as good or better than forecast with posted speeds of 78.3 mph in the open class, 77.34 in the 18-meter class, 68.65 mph actual in the FAI class and 64.46 mph actual in the sports class. While the pilots were flying in a gorgeous sky the cooks and helpers were prepping and cooking delicious “Chicken on a Beer” for dinner. If you have never had it before your life is not complete.
