Day 1 AT LAST

Good afternoon race fans!  The 2021 Club Class nationals are officially underway!  Weatherperson Tony Condon had a perfect briefing this morning with much of his prediction being dead on.  A sniffer was launched at 11:30 and One (David McMaster) quickly reported climbing through 4,000 in 6 knots.  Of course the launch was started shortly thereafter, and the start gate opened at 12:30 after a perfectly coordinated launch.

As I am writing from a contestant’s perspective, and not an “eyes on the ground” perspective, I do not have a complete picture of the day, however I can tell you that the clouds were good to the first turn, which was Ferguson with a 10 km ring around it.  These clouds continued to Corntassel, the second turn which had a 5km ring.  It seemed as if many people struggled on turns three (Eton 10 km) and four (Cleveland Y 9 km) in the blue, but finally managed to snatch a good climb at Cleveland and make their way home.

Weatherperson Tony Condon wins the day, followed closely by Mike Westbrook and Tom Holloran. The scoring is still a preliminary, as there are some kinks to be worked out in the new hybrid (SSA and FAI) scoring, and a big shout out must go to those diligently working to make sure the scores are correct. All contestants are currently content and debriefing over yet another great meal put on by the organizers.  Tomorrow looks to be another long race day, so yours truly will sign off for the evening and prepare for another long race day.  See ‘ya at the airport tomorrow!
