A Good Start

We are gathered in Dansville NY, home of the Finger Lakes Soaring Club, for the Club Class Nationals and the Region 3 contest. Our veteran team includes CM Ann Lafford, CD Jacquie Doherty, Ops Chief Rick Lafford, and Scorer Rick Roman.

Today was the official practice day for the Nationals and whether you were in the air or on the ground, you couldn’t ask for a nicer day for mid-August in Upstate New York: dry, northwesterly winds, high 80-ish, sunny, lots of cu. The Club Class had a three hour task: Hammondsport-Nunda-Alfred-SevenGullies and the R3 Sports Class a slightly less ambitious two hour task to Avoca-Nunda-Hornell-SevenGullies.

Cloudbase got as high as 6500ft, thermals 4-5kts. There were some challenges: (1) early on, before the wind calmed down, the thermals were ripped up and (2) not all the cu were honest. But everyone came back with a smile and the airport was filled with the chirpy sound that marks the end of a fun flying day.
